Summer is almost here, and I couldn’t be more happy about it! I am a summer girl at heart, and I’m pretty sure I was born to wear flip flops and be in the sun! Plus, what teacher isn’t happy about having a couple badly needed months to unwind and revamp for the next school year??? Let’s start with five of my favorite fiction books about summer!
This adorable story follows Mouse and his friend Minka through their adventures at a summer picnic. Mouse gets to experience different sights, sounds, and tastes for the very first time as Minka helps him learn what they all are. The descriptive language on each page is fantastic! Plus, it’s a great way to review colors as an added bonus!
This story introduces us to a boy who keeps asking and asking his mother if it is summer yet. Each time she responds, she tells him on more way he can tell that summer is getting close. The simple but captivating illustrations take us straight through the transition from spring to summer until we finally find the boy and his mom sitting in a pool eating yummy strawberries!
This fun rhyming book tells us all about a young girls adventures during a summer day and summer night. She sees and hears all kinds of things that are common during the summer, and the rich language provides lots of opportunities for vocabulary development!
This story is full of things you can do during the summer! From bike rides to parades to camping, the kids in this story do it all!
You’ll recognize the familiar rhythm of this story if you’re familiar with The Night Before Christmas! This family is trying to get everything they need for their summer vacation, and that is no easy feat!

What I really love about this book is that it includes some things you normally don’t see in a book about summer like loons and spiders!
This book shows you what’s summer is like when you live in the city. This adorable little girl shows us everything she does on a hot summer day from sidewalk chalk to popsicles. She even fries an egg on the sidewalk!
The predictable text in this book will make it so easy for your kiddos to read it all by themselves! The photos directly support the text, plus this book even has a table of contents and an index if you’re kiddos are ready to start learning about nonfiction text features!
Pebble Plus publishes some of my favorite nonfiction books, and this one is no exception! I love their photos and the way they explain things in a way young children will understand without dumbing it down. This book is all about how things like people, animals, and plants change during the summer.
Rookie Readers is another favorite of mine for nonfiction books! This one talks all about different ways you can tell that it’s summer. Plus it even includes directions on how to make sun prints!
